Students in Miss Marsel's Reading class recently finished a novel by Michelle Y. Green. This novel told the story of the famous Negro Leagues baseball pitcher Mamie Johnson. The book is called A Strong Right Arm. This story was especially fitting to be read in March as it discusses important moments in Black History (February was Black History Month), it depicts a strong and empowering woman (March is Women's History Month) and it is all about baseball (Spring training is well underway!)!

Mamie ''Peanut'' Johnson had a dream. That dream was to play professional baseball. Along the way, Mamie has some problems. In the beginning, her grandma dies. Not a good way to start a dream! Mamie also discovers that girls are not allowed to play baseball, but they are only allowed to play softball. Nobody thought that Mamie could ever play baseball on a team of only boys. But, things got brighter, and Mamie showed everyone that black women can play baseball on a team of white men. Mamie proved that with her strong right arm.

There were a lot of boys one the team. They treated Mamie like she was there royal. There were like brothers to Mamie. Though that her grandma died she still worked hard 24/7. She had an uncle named Bones. He taught Mamie how to throw a knuckle ball and Mamie used it a lot.

Mamie "Peanut" Johnson wanted to play professional baseball but she was a black woman and it is hard to play baseball when you're a girl. Even after a strange turn of events, she finally gets to play baseball when she is about 15 years old. So then, Bish Tyson comes to her game and asks her if she would like to try out for the Indianapolis Clowns.

This is a book entitled ''A Strong Right Arm''. It's about a girl named Mamie peanut Jonson. She wanted to play base ball but some things got in the way ,like segregation. So she was unable to play for a while... My favorite character is Mamie because she got a lot of people out when she was ABLE to play. NO! I did not like the book at all. It was really boring because all it talks about is baseball. I recommend you don't read this book if you don't like base ball, if you do like baseball then this is the book for you.

Mamie Peanut Johnson was black and a girl. People didn't think she could play ball, but boy didn't she prove them wrong! Mamie could throw as fast as lightning. Mamie's grandma died when she was a young women. Mamie had a dream to play professional baseball. If you find out what your dream Is you may make it come true. My favorite character is Mamie because she showed everyone they can do anything if they put there minds to it. I love the book because it was kind of funny, sad, and interesting. I enjoyed when she didn't care that much about what people think about her. I think people could look up to a person like Mamie Johnson.
